David Wright: Best Shape Of His Career

David Wright is one of the vital cogs in the Mets lineup and as the ideal Number 3 hitter, with his combination of good plate discipline, power and speed, he is never an easy out.

Wright battled injuries, mainly in his right knee and left groin, in 2009 like many of his teammates but it wasn't until a concussion in Mid August that fans realized how valuable his battling every day on the field was taken for granted by so many people.

He did come back in September on the day that he was eligible to come off the Disabled List and did contribute in many games that ended up being meaningless because the injuries to all players could not be overcome.

It was no secret that the 94 mph fastball by Matt Cain that struck Wright in his left temple affected his confidence at the plate and many pitchers did what they had to do and took advantage of his vulnerability to the inside pitch.

Struggles aside, September 12th saw Wright have four hits, two of them 2-run HR's and 6 RBIs on the day, with the last HR inthe 9th inning being the game winner.  This was one day before the Mets were mathematically eliminated from NL East contention, the Phillies were the superior team, but Wright made sure that the Phillies knew that the Mets were not going down without a fight.

Even though position players were not required to report to Spring Training until last week, Wright was in Port St Lucie a month early and even worked with Howard Johnson, the Mets hitting coach and Wright's "baseball Dad" in December to work on hitting fundamentals and mechanics.

Many people are talking about hows Wright has bulked up and slimmed down his physique and is in the best physical shape of his baseball career and some are even speculating that HgH has come into play because of Wright's desperation to show that his HR total in 2009 was a fluke.

Obviously many fans and media personalities alike will be monitoring Wright and his power numbers in 2010, but accusing him of falsely helping his body with banned substances borders on cruel, he is one of the most well known and popular players in baseball.

His teammates look to him for guidance and stabillity, the fans look to him for production and accountability, his hard work this winter should be appreciated not questioned as valid reason for his physical shape.
