Former Mets GM Fired By ESPN

It’s been a bad couple of months for Steve Phillips.  The former Mets general manager is now a former baseball analyst for Sports’ biggest network.

It all started when word came out that Phillips had engaged in what he described as a week long fling with a production assistant named Brooke Hundley.  The 22 year old woman apparently expected more from Phillips than Phillips was willing to give, and a real life “fatal attraction” type relationship ensued.

Hundley apparently sent a letter to Phillips’ wife (yeah he was married, why else would you sleep with a girl half your age, and then break it off?) detailing their affair (and a birthmark on his crotch) and challenging his wife to a duel of sorts for his affection.  Even crazier, Hundley apparently posed as a classmate of Phillips’ teenage son, and told HIM about the affair as well.  Clearly this is a woman Steve-O should have started a relationship with.  The man’s less than stellar decision making as a Major League Baseball executive extends into his personal life as well!  Who knew?!

The drama doesn’t stop there.  Apparently after the Phillips family began filing restraining orders against Hundley, she filed a restraining order against Phillips saying that he would not leave her alone, and that she was feeling threatened.

In the document -- filed on August 20 in Connecticut -- Brooke claims while at a hotel back in July, Steve "bought me a strong drink and then cornered me ... trying to persuade me to come to his hotel suite to spend the night."

Brooke claims Steve called her hotel room until she agreed to see him, then "after the night he continued to text me on a regular basis with inappropriate things." Brooke says she "tried to get him to stop" but again agreed to meet up with him "a few times after work in the parking lot."

This is hardly the first time Phillips has had problems with female coworkers.  In 1998 Phillips took a leave of absence from the Mets after an employee who worked at the team’s spring training offices filed a sexual harassment suit.  Later Phillips admitted to having a brief fling with the woman, and having other affairs with women during his marriage.  Phillips left the Mets in 2003, and joined ESPN before the season began in 2005.

On September 2nd, Steve’s wife Marni finally filed for divorce, the latest affair apparently the straw that broke the camel’s back.  However, Phillips was still able to keep the story about Hundley under wraps until last week, when all hell broke loose.

Today it’s been announced that Phillips has been fired from ESPN a network that is not used to having its talent draw this kind of negative attention.  In looking at Phillips professional and personal history, it hardly seems like a surprise.  The man apparently has a penchant for destroying any good will, or good luck that he stumbles into.  This was not a man who was some beloved sports figure.  He’s widely regarded as pompous and arrogant, and has drawn enough ire that a Firestevephillips.com website was erected earlier this year.

No longer employable at the major league baseball level, and now most likely no longer employable in broadcast television, it appears Phillips’ inability to keep it in his pants has ended his high profile career.
