According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post the Mets will not pursue Jason Varitek this offseason. Varitek's $5 million team option was declined by the Boston Red Sox on Monday but the veteran catcher still has a $3 million player option he is discussing with his agent Scott Boras if he will accept or not. Varitek lost his position in the lineup when the Sox acquired All Star catcher Victor Martinez from the Cleveland Indians this season.
