-Rangers were very close to acquiring Sheldon Souray from Edmonton for Ales Kotalik, Chris Higgins, and a member of the Woflpack (believed to be Corey Potter). However, after Souray broke his hand the other night the Rangers told the Oilers the deal is done.

-Dion Phaneuf found out he had been traded when girlfriend Elisha Cuthbert's friend called her after seeing the news on a Flames message board. While Phanuef was on the phone with Cuthbert he got the call from Calgary's GM.

-J.S. Giguere did not want to go to Toronto, but the Ducks told him if he did not waive his no trade clause he would be sent down to the teams AHL affiliate, the San Antonio Rampage.

-The Thrashers are receiving little to no offers for Illya Kovalchuk. Of coarse this can and probably will change but many believe the Blackhawks, Kings, or Devils will acquire the Thrashers star. He has made it known he does not want to play for a team in Canada. Kovalchuk is seeking a long term deal worth $10 million a season. Good luck with that Kovalchuk! You're about 6 years too late for that kind of request. He has had an offer from an unknown KHL team for $124 million with $70 million paid up front. This was reported by Sam Rosen during a Rangers-Thrashers game a few weeks back.

-The Penguins have inquired about acquiring Paul Kariya from the Blues.

-The Islanders may hold on to Martin Biron as some in the organization are still not convinced Rick DiPietro will stay healthy this time around.

-The Islanders are also looking to deal Brendan Witt as they are pleased with the development of some of their young defense men and feel his worth will rise come deadline time as teams look for impact playoff players as Witt has been considered in previous years.

*NOTE: Expect deals and more rumors to begin happening pretty soon, as due to the Olympics the NHL has a roster freeze on from February 15- February 28. That only leaves 3 days until the trade deadline on March 3, 2010*
